{"id":4928,"date":"2020-08-10T15:15:01","date_gmt":"2020-08-10T20:15:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/billheinz.net\/?p=4928"},"modified":"2020-10-09T11:00:31","modified_gmt":"2020-10-09T16:00:31","slug":"8-9-2020-melrose-to-vv-w-a-new-shortcut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/billheinz.net\/?p=4928","title":{"rendered":"8\/9\/2020 Melrose to VV (w\/a new shortcut)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>8.9.2020 Black River (Melrose to VV w\/ NEW Shortcut)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s trip was COVID 13, and it was a weird \u201c13\u201d adventure.\u00a0 We started out with a heavy rain forecast, but ended up with sun and a few little drops during the day, overall a nice weather day.\u00a0 We tried a new shortcut to get directly to our parking spot on Hwy VV, I have looked at that cutoff for about 40 years and never tried it\u2014until today.\u00a0 It made the full day an adventure, charting new territory and wondering what was just around the next bend.\u00a0 The cutoff started as a wide open and very nice trail, but we knew it could not last, and it did not.\u00a0 We finally came to the surprise ending that we feared.\u00a0 A sharp turn with a good current and little or no choice on direction so we chose one and went with it, and to my surprise everyone made it\u2014except one\u2014ME!!!!\u00a0 You take your eye off the trail for a minute and find yourself on top of a log and too \u201chigh centered\u201d to recover so I flipped.\u00a0 The only thing everyone heard was \u201cOh, S#@T\u201d and they knew what happened.\u00a0 The crew has enjoyed a pretty good laugh at my expense\u2014but that it what kayaking is all about\u2014it is not a matter of \u201cif\u201d you fall in, it is a matter of \u201cwhen\u201d you fall in.\u00a0 Truly it was a fun and great experience and would not have traded that new adventure for anything.<\/p>\n<p>Our day for wildlife was a little light, we only saw turtles, one Eagle, and a Muskrat.\u00a0 Our music selection does reflect the views of the day.\u00a0 Our crew for this exciting trip was; Steve, Bill, Teresa, Tom, and Me.\u00a0 Our water temperature for the day was 70\u00b0 and our air temp was a humid 89\u00b0 and the water stage was a little low at 3.7 feet.\u00a0 We traveled our 10.5 miles (we saved \u00bc mile by taking our shortcut) and out travel average was a relatively slow 3.4 miles per hour.\u00a0 The water was very still, with an occasional head wind.\u00a0 As usual, we had another great day sprinkled with a bit of excitement<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>To watch the video click the arrow and then enlarge the screen with the icon in the lower right of the screen.\u00a0 To get back to this page just shrink the page back to normal.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>No still photos this week, everything is in the video.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>Our music selection for today was decided by Steve and Teresa:\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em><u>Muskrat Love by Captain &amp;
