10.11.2020 Black River (Melrose to VV) (River Gradient2.5 ft/mile )
Today marks the COVID-21 trip. We have far surpassed and celebrated our success over COVID-19 for this year. A last minute planned trip due to visiting royalty, but as usual a great trip. Any trip, on any day, is always great. We had cloudy skies right up to the last half hour of the trip and air temperature did finally reach 68°for the day—but a slow start. Slight winds that did decrease, so our 10.85 miles in relatively low water (3.7 feet) turned out pretty good. A little nudging now and then to get over the sand, but all survived—just a little extra exercise. The water temperature at 54°is starting to show some signs of fall, but the trees are past full color on the river, however, we did have a few scenic spots. Our trip took us 3 hours and 15 minutes at an average of 3.2 mph, because we did stop to take a scenic tour of a mock cave—well at least Steve did, and when we all saw him sink into the mud we were very comfortable having him do the exploring and just bring back some of these pictures.
Along our route we did manage to have over 20 Eagle sightings and a rare sighting of Big Foot (Darrell). We saw and talked to an old 89 year old canoeist that had taken the “shortcut” not knowing what it was like, but as his group said; “You can’t tell him anything”. I interviewed him at the end and he said it was terrible and he would never do it again—as we experienced when we did it earlier this year. The only difference is—we will do it again, because we aren’t smart enough to “not do it”. The crew that ventured out included the royalty; Dan and Judy, Bill, Teresa, Steve, Tom, and Me.
COVID-21—is it the last trip of the year? Maybe and then again maybe not, we will see.
