4.25.2021Black River (Hwy VV to Hunter’s Bridge (2.5 ft/mile )
Our second trip of the year—still need a theme for the 2021 tours? It was an (OK) day, which for kayaking means that it was a little cool. We started out at 51° and cloudy and the temperature dropped all day to 48° and even had threatening clouds for a time. The sun started to peek through when we were all done, but still cold and windy again. Wind speeds were approximately 15-20 mph. The crew for the day included The Peters (Bill and They), Steve, Tom, and Me. There was a little bit of whining, but it chilled after a while. The water temperature is maintaining 50°, surprisingly. The water level today was right at 4.5 ft. which was adequate for this trip—we only dragged a couple of times but that was due to not paying attention to the river. When the river talks, we should listen. We completed the 12.7 mile trip in 3 hours and 48 minutes, for an average speed of 3.8mph. We did not dally on breaks, due to the temperature, so we were completely done and home by 4pm.
Our wildlife for the day was limited to a few very high flying Eagles—specks in the air, Geese, and a surprise visitor—the cold “Socialist”, so appropriate for the temperatures we experienced.
