Well, it has been too long since we have gone kayaking, but, we (Bill and Teresa Peters, Tom Hundt, Steve Dunn, and myself) did finally get out on the Root River, in Minnesota. This section of the Root took us from Whalen, MN to Peterson, MN. The trip is relatively short, only 10.7 miles, and took us approximately 3 1/2 hours. We were doing very little paddling–everyone seemed to want to relax and just enjoy the beautiful day that we were having. The air temperature was 84 degrees and the water temperature was right at 74 degrees.
We did see a couple of Eagles flying very high, a couple of turtles, and several gaggles of geese. Teresa had an exceptionally great day–every sandbar seemed to be filled with Butterflies waiting to welcome her to their world.
The only down side to the day was someone forgot to spray for tubes–we had tubers all over up and down the river, with a blasting boom box. We quickly passed them up and gladly left them in our past.
We have all decided that this trip is too short so the next time we go we will be adding on another leg of the river. We will continue on from Peterson approximately 5 more miles and end at Rushford, right at the last dam, looks like it could be fun depending on the river height.
We had a great day, and look forward to our next trip.
A few geese, but many more gaggles to come
A few nice rapids throughout the day mostly class 1, but, we had a class 2 to add excitement.
Tubers coming out of the woods–they were everywhere???? How do they multiply?
Butterflies for Teresa
I’m “thinking”, leave me alone.
See how high the water went–see the tree branch stuck in the bridge?
Nice class 2 rapids here. The picture doesn’t do it justice, they were terrific.
Nice set of rapids over this dam at the very end.
A whole herd of Butterflies for Teresa–it was just her day.
