7.10.2020 Root River (Whalen to Peterson)

We picked another beautiful day to go kayaking, on COVID 10. We switched from Saturday to Friday to be able to guarantee the weather. It turned out perfect at 86° and water temps right at 70°. The water stage was at 5.2 feet, a little high but very doable for kayaks. We enjoyed a very leisure 11 mile trip at an average of 3.8 mph, plenty of push from the current so little effort on our part. Out total trip was a about 3.5 hours with a couple of stops. Our crew for the day included: Teresa, Mikayla, Victor, Steve Dunn, myself, and Mick an old time regular returning to the kayaking group after a long hiatus. We had a few mishaps today with Victor, MiKayla, and Mick enjoying a brief swim.

Wildlife today included Eagles, Buzzards, Geese and 1 fawn enjoying a drink at the river’s edge. The Buzzards seemed especially interested in us today—maybe they had high expectations for a gourmet meal.
