5/29/2021 Chippewa River: Durand to Pepin

5.29.2021  Chippewa River:  Durand to Pepin  (2.1’/mile)

Trip Number (21-7) We conquered a new river today, well at least a few of us, the last time we did this section was June 2, 2012, nine years ago, to the week.  We also had a returning guest, back after a 3 year hiatus, Denny, who along with Pat S., Bill (No Teresa this trip—so I have to give an honorable mention to her), Steve and Me.  The five of us started out on a brisk 45° morning which did warm to about 64° by the end of the trip, on a 15.6 mile tour of the Chippewa River.  The Chippewa is a very scenic river, with the color green being very dominate, very picturesque, quite wide and deep especially today with a river stage of 7.45 feet.  This gave us a peppy current to work with as we completed the 15.6 miles in 3 hours and 42 minutes at an average moving speed of 4.2 mph.  We did have a headwind of approximately 10-15 mph at times, so we did need to take a 42 minute break for the entire trip.  Denny—the returning celebrity—was not real impressed.  That is a lot of time to be in a “kayak position” if you are not used to it.  Hopefully Denny will forgive us and return another day (maybe that is why it has been 3 years since he went with us last).  It was a pleasant paddle with very comfortable 62° waters, tremendous scenery and wildlife, for us to enjoy.

Our wildlife for the day included; 3 deer (poor picture due to the camouflage of the animal), turtles, snake, and many Eagles—we even saw one dive and catch a fish.  The fish was so big the Eagle struggled to lift it out of the water, but we are sure he killed it and came back for it after we passed the area.
